COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) says a Thursday evening fire in a residential property is under investigation after a blaze caused heavy damage to a 16th Street home. Investigators said the vacant property was for sale and unoccupied.
Firefighters were called to 3122 E. 16th St. at around 11:10 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the residence. Upon entry, they discovered that most of the fire was in the kitchen. While dousing the flames there, crews noticed the fire spreading to the attic. After extinguishing the attic fire, they noticed significant damage to the roof system, including the rafters and decking.
The house was a vacant property being sold through a local realty company. CFD investigators contacted the owners who said it had been vacant for six months and on the market. The homeowners said an offer had recently been made and accepted.
The investigation continues and CFD plans to work with the home inspector as part of the inquiry.
No estimate was provided but investigators believe the damage to structural components may result in a significant loss to the property. There were no injuries reported.
