COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Bartholomew County man was arrested after the Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to a report of shots fired at around 1:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Preliminary details indicate that a witness went to check on a 68-year-old man at his house in the 300 block of Pence Street, in Columbus. The witness told police that when the man answered the door he had a firearm, appeared to be experiencing a mental health episode, and shot the weapon inside the house.
Officers set up a perimeter around the home and requested the CPD SWAT Team, which consists of members of the Columbus Police Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbus Regional Health Medics.
Before SWAT arrived, the man came outside holding a handgun. He complied with CPD’s commands and was taken into custody without incident. The firearm was seized and no injuries were reported. The man was alone inside the house. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Columbus Police detectives were called to the scene and are still investigating.
